Everyone Should Blog Like Curt Schilling

Even if you're not a sports fan, I highly recommend checking out Curt Schilling's outstanding blog - 38 Pitches. Schilling is a veteran starting pitcher for the Boston Red Sox. He's also a big technology enthusiast.

Schilling's a busy guy. It's baseball season here in the US so I imagine there are big demands on his schedule - including travel, a radio program, his charitable interests and, oh yeah, playing ball. Still, he finds the time to post to 38 Pitches almost daily. Not only that, when he posts it makes for great reading.

This week 38 Pitches was even more gripping. Schilling made some comments on his radio program about the ever-controversial Barry Bonds. They were probably things he shouldn't have said. After taking some heat, he went out and yesterday posted a public apology. It's rather compelling.

I wish every company had its high profile individuals blogging like Curt Schilling does. It really can do wonders to humanize sometimes mythic figures. This example reinforces why blogging is a great vehicle for PR.

Steve,

I agree that high profile people at corporations should be blogging, but only if they have the right personality. Not every C Level executive has a place in the blogosphere. Unfortunately for poor Schilling, he is now taking heat for apologizing.

Sports talk-show host Jim Rome's ehtos of 'have a take and don't suck' works well in the blogging world. Schilling has lots of takes that don't suck. And thus, he makes for provocative soundbites no matter the media.

My friends and I have been in endless discussions about the 'staging' launch of 38pitches and the bloody sock controversy. Great timing, wonder if they planned it that way? Great blog..

His candor is certainly impressive. His inability to shut up is not. Curt Schilling is a great example of someone who needs media training.

It's getting tiresome to hear these guys sound off in front of microphones and then when the heat turns up go and apologize. Anybody with common sense - something Schilling seems to lack - would not make those comments in the first place. As for his blogging, it's part of the 24/7/365 Curt Schilling show, of which he is author, producer and director, as the guys on PTI pointed out quite correctly yesterday. If he pretends to be a journalist the first thing he should do is get his facts straight before sounding off.
