Blog Search is Dead and Google Killed It

Technorati today launched a new look and feel and under the hood improvements that are designed to help searchers find what they're looking for across the live web, not just blogs. David Sifry sums up the changes over on their corporate blog. TechCrunch has more.

The improvements are nice, but I have to admit that I don't use Technorati nearly as much as I used to. Link authority was a good metric a year ago, but it's not nearly as worthwhile today when you consider all of the centers of influence one may wish to search and track. Link authority doesn't tell me who's an influencer on Facebook or which video artists are rising on YouTube. It was great in 2005, ok in 2006 and really has faded from relevance in 2007.

A lot has changed in the last couple of years. Web search engines are getting faster, personalized and thus more comprehensive. As Marissa Mayer indicates, searchers want the most relevant and often the most recent results. All you need to do is look at the daily Google Trends reports and it's apparent just how much timely content and news drives search. This necessitates the integration of live information with more static data.

This is exactly the approach Google is taking with the launch of their universal search algorithm. The next natural step for Google is to add RSS feeds and date sorting to their primary index. I wrote about this two years ago and still believe it is coming - especially now. Play with Google's experimental timeline view and it doesn't take a lot of imagination to see where this is all going.

While we still use vertical search engines today to dig through news, blogs, video, etc., their days are numbered. The lines are blurrier. Google News, for example, has lots of blogs. More importantly, the big web search engines are going becoming sophisticated enough to make an educated guess as to what information you're seeking. It won't care if it comes from the live or static web. It will serve up relevance and soon time-stamped sorting.

In short, this means the heyday of dedicated "live web" search engines like Technorati is coming to a close. Technorati's best bet going forward is to hook its technology into engines that can scan the archived web. That's where the world is going and what searchers want.

Ugh, I can hardly read the ticker at the top. Green on black! And what a tiny font.

Steve --

Great post. That's why when we re-launched BuzzTracker.com in January, we focused on providing the latest and greatest for granular topics -- and using Blogs as a means to an end rather than the point. In other words, I think a very very small percentage of the population cares about "tracking the meme," -- people just want info about their topic of choice. Where we see white space is in going after very very granular topics, where we believe we can provide superior coverage. Check it out and let me know what you think -- would love to grab coffee one day.

Alan Warms

Whoa, the new site slows my browser down to a crawl. We're using very old pc's here with Fedora as a desktop OS. Luckily, they still have http://mobile.technorati.com/

Steve, I also use blog search quite a bit as a research aide. I have found that there are pros and cons to Technorati, blogsearch.google.com, and bloglines. I find that bloglines is actually the best of the three. The best way to search through RSS feeds, anyway.

Personally, as a researcher, I'd still prefer to know the nature of the site my information is coming from. So, blog search is stil relevant for me, so long as (most) blogs mostly get the root core of their content from traditional media, or other blogs. Traditional media still pays the mney to send the people out to report the news. Blogs are a god way to know how a certain set of human networks are reacting to that news. And, some blogs do set the "tone" for certain segments of people getting their information via the internet. Especially in US politics, and in the technology and business sectors.

Yet, I also throw certain wiki networks into my bloglines feeds, and search those. Wiki networks actually *do* create original theoretical content, yet they also do react to the "news of the day", usually by contextualizing it into the theoretical constructs being built in the wiki. So, it's good to look at that, too.

Although, I agree that there are emerging new areas, which can be tracked by RSS feed, but are not "blogs", such as tagging communities, twitter, flickr, YouTube, social networks, and more. Even IRC networks, voice and video conferencing. it's interesting to think about all of the ways that people are communicating, and how those add up to some form of "influence", or "authority". It's interesting to have feedback from actual humans, and see them a voice in what they see as "authority". Trust metrics, and so on. as you can see with projects like http://beta.newstrust.net/

Would also be great if this semantic "trust" were open data, so that we could mine it based on different criteria. The easiest route to this is an XHTML/Microformat markup incorporation, so that "votes", "reviews", "trust" and other meaning can be easily found usign existing technology.

The first thing I noticed was the ticker as well, and it really doesn't leave a good first impression.

And Steve, I think your title is perfect for this article. Google stepped on their turf and now it looks like Technorati is doing anything they can to keep their head above the water.

I too at one point used Technorati regularly, but I don't think I can say I've used it once within the last six months. It's just not what it used to be which is unfortunate.

PS. My bloglines rss feeds are here:

http://www.bloglines.com/public/SamRose

:)

I'm wondering why Technorati ditched the 'blog rank' feature. Had it become a meaningless number? Or are they just trying to promote 'authority' and nothing more?

I'd very much like to see where I rank as far as Authority against other blogs I consider closely related to my field. I had been using Technorati for this, but now I'll have to rely on Compete or Quantcast, I guess.

Well, Google is slowing taking over any vertical search that is web related. It's going to be difficult to build a company that can win against Google.

finally google has a good contendor to play with. go rati go

I think that someone should write a list of all of the "the death of..." sites. They are getting entertaining.

What is actually hapenning is the big players (Need I name them?) are buying up those with long term prospects as they currently exist, and ignoring those which are good at the moment, but don't have long term prospects.

So, blog search, will blogs last? Probably, after all they are an easy way for people to create a site.

Will blog search last? Probably, it is an easy way to search for blogs.

Corum Watches - the elite watches that are not afraid of innovation

Severin Wunderman aims to keep the Corum watches top place of luxury Swiss watch making by maintaining the company’s tradition of precision craftsmanship, but in the same time keeping a keen eye on the future. With strong tradition and famous reputation, Corum has to keep its standards very high. Corum manufactures have created a rich assortment of high-quality Corum watches.

In 2006 Corum has signed with Harrah’s Entertainment, Inc. a letter of plan to enter into a six-year deal. This means that the luxury Swiss watchmaker will become the “Official Timepiece of the World Series of Poker” (WSOP). This letter plan asks CORUM to produce and market special timepieces inspired by the World Series of Poker brand.

I think that the world’s most prestigious poker tournament agrees perfectly well with Corum’s philosophy. They both share a dedication to excellence and distinction, and also a deep passion for the heritage of poker. That’s why I think that there could be no better partner for the WSOP, than this luxury watch brand that takes risks with all its daring designs and distinctive innovations.
