Tweak Shows Digg Maybe Under Pressure to Serve More Ads

Yesterday on the Digg home page there was a small item about some cosmetic changes that were made to the user interface. Individual story pages now make it easier to spot some additional information about the post. This includes the time the item was dugg, the topic, the user, source and more.

However, what the diggers did not say is that the UI tweak also allows digg to serve up more Google Adsense ads. It basically enlarges the most visible ad tile on the page so that it can now serve up to three ads.

Could it be that Digg is under some revenue pressures to serve up more ads? Quite possibly. Word has it that the ads on Digg do not perform all that well. I would love to see some data to the contrary if anyone has it.
