Tagging Gains US Fans
AP reports that Americans love tagging. The Pew Internet & American Life Project found that 28 percent of Internet users have tagged content, and 7 percent have done so on a typical day. Get the full report here.

I remember a friend who ran a blogging service tell me that lots of people tagged, but very few came up with original tags for their work. Now perhaps that was reflective of the users of the service.
Nonetheless, 28% is a small proportion, I think. I mean, if tagging is a decent measure of participating in helping the Internet help others, then it looks like a third are pretty active in some way, and the rest are quite passive.
I'm not saying this stuff to be mean - I realize I am strongly implying that the mass of users online are unoriginal and inattentive to making the most out of this. I'm saying this rather to ask generally what the full significance of tagging is.
