Pew: 12% Have Listened to a Podcast, But Only 1% Download Daily

A new study by the Pew Internet & American Life Project found that 12% of Internet users have downloaded a podcast  for listening at a future point in time. This is up from the 7% surveyed earlier this year. However, they're not addicted. A scant 1% download podcasts on a typical day. In other words, they're probably not subscribing via RSS, but simply plucking them for later use. Download the fulll report (PDF).

» Pew: Podcasts aren't all that from TechBlog
I've written previously that I think podcasts are largely a regional phenomenon, with geeky influencers on the West and East coasts who listen to them while commuting talking them up. But most folks, I believe, are unimpressed. Backing that up is... [Read More]

Good example of why flash players are so important for podcasters. People listen to the show at the page where the show is located.

The only podcasts I find any good are done by people who have experience doing audio.

Well, it's up almost 50%. I like to see it that way.

@Russell: I don't agree with you. The ones I love are all amateurish but of good substance. To me the power of podcast is the content. I have never heard of a PR or marketing radio show (at least not in Europe), so how is a PR professional to have any audio experience.

Au contraire, professionally produced shows have always disappointed me so far. I do not want to listen to anchors, I want to listen to the professional.

When mobile audio devices are used more widely the acceptance of podcasts will increase accordingly.

I consider myself pretty internet savvy and I don't know how to subscribe to a podcast via RSS. They don't seem well enough marketed or advertised. Not to mention I don't own an iPod, although I do own and MP3 player, and sound doesn't work on my Ubuntu box. Give it time I guess.

I have set iTunes to download close to a dozen podcasts each and every day. I especially enjoy podcasts from public radio (PRI, BBC, CBC) which contain a wealth of informative programming. The flexibility of using podcasts instead of listening to the live broadcast is great.

Wow. What a f****** advantage us one percenters have!

Well, good to know folks are possibly listening to my podcast :)

This is true of most things in most people's lives.
Look at the unread books people have - nothing new under the sun here.
Woody Allen comment was that 95 % of life is just showing up.
