85,000 members is pretty hypothetical and not especially impressive, since SixApart has been aggressively cross-promoting Vox to its existing LiveJournal etc userbase during the lengthy beta. I know a lot of LJ users who have signed up for Vox to see what it's all about (myself included) and then gone right back to LJ when the trivial benefits didn't outweigh the non-trivial switching costs. I don't think Vox's 85k is any more indicative of regular users than MySpace's 100+ million.
Also note that LJ users - the natural initial Vox constituency - are long accustomed to an ad-free environment so it's not just switching costs but commercial clutter that SixApart will have to get Vox adopters over.
