Search Engine Roundtable has discovered that Google may have set up a mechanism that enables a webmaster to separate the web content they want indexed from portions they may not want to see in Google. Apparently these tags already exist when using Google's search appliance inside an enterprise. However there are signs that now they might be extending it to the entire web.
This sounds easy enough to test. If the "googleon" and "googleoff" tags are indeed universal it will change the index. Web site owners will now have a lot more control over what information they want to make more widely available (not that I am necessarily advocating this).
