One of my favorite marketing/PR tools is one that really wasn't created for this purpose. It's Google Suggest for Google News. This special version of Google News, which launched earlier this year, brings back the most common search queries related to yours. You can really learn a lot about how people think about news by seeing how they search. Consider the following examples...
Figure 1 - Google's move into Ann Arbor is attracting more visit than the newly launched Google Checkout
Figure 2 - Searches for Melinda Gates' article on Wikipedia rank surprisingly high
Figure 3 - People are actively seeking out blogs on the Israeli situation in Lebanon
Figure 4 - People are more interested in the recent Nielsen study on podcasts than they are in podcasting overall
Figure 5 - People sure love those advertising rumors!
Figure 6 - There's lots of interest for some reason in Travelocity's PR this week
