Retailer Opens Outpost in Second Life

Advergaming in games like Second Life is beginning to really take steam. The 3pointD blog has discovered that American Apparel is opening a virtual store inside the role-playing game. American Apparel has 130 physical stores worldwide, including over 30 here in the US. In-game ads - which this is akin to - will hit $400M, according to CNET.

Hi, Steve. I'm fascinated by the Second Life concept but haven't yet made my way in there to take a look. News like this will push me off the fence and most likely do the same for many more people.

How long until we see web strategies that incorporate Second Life as a meaningful component? Not very long by the looks of it.

Best,
George

Good bit of news Steve. I'm not sure I would lump it into the category of "advergaming" though. On the surface, it may seem similar to Nokia putting billboards in splinter cell, but secondlife is not by any means a video game.

It is actually more akin to the internet, except web sites are land, and users have avatars etc. Like the internet it is an endlessly "co-creative" environment, with a rich, user accessible scripting language etc. What American Apparel have done here is the equivalent of creating a web site.

I highly recommend cc chapmans podcast "managing the grey" where he gives a ssecondlife primer:

I think that's a fantastic concept that will probably work out well for American Apparel. For example, I'd never heard of the store before, but I'm definitely interested now. I'm also interested in checking out the Second Life game to see how the virtual store looks.

Big Up! This is straight Dope!

I think Wes Keltner of the Ad Option did this for them.

Your blog site is very informative. The articles are very interesting.
It’s a good source of information about shopping. Thus, I’m looking for a blog site where my Closeouts and Liquidations website is related to.
I’m glad that I found this site. This is a great way of sharing ideas in web marketing. It’s a great blog. I really appreciate it. Keep it up!
