Gnoos Blog Search Launches

Earlier today I panned the new Ask Jeeves/Bloglines blog search engine. Ironically on the same day a new blog search competitor emerged that I like a lot - it's called Gnoos and it's from the land Down Under. It's about time someone from outside the US entered the blog search market. This is a flat world after all.

Gnoos is innovating in several ways by allowing people to comment and tag search results. In addition, the site includes digg-like features where you can vote for or against a particular blog post.

I like the idea that people can engage with blog content somewhere else other than on the site it originated. It taps into the wisdom of crowds. This is why I am a fan of Rojo. They are the only reader  that allows you to tag results and tap into personalized reading lists. If Rojo had a mobile version I might consider converting over full-time. For now, Newsgator remains my core reader.

Gnoos needs to get a lot more comprehensive and build in some authority ranking tools and feeds before it is ready for primetime. Still it's very promsing. If they can scale up, they're a serious contender. I am rooting for the Aussie underdogs.

The amount of content currently indexed is nowhere near useful, but, the social search aspect has great potential. They've started down a similar path as swicki. Technorati would do good to learn a few things from them..
