Digg to Move Into Politics, Other Verticals
Rob Hof says that Digg is getting ready to make a big push into other verticals. The citizen-powered news site, will add coverage of world news, entertainment, politics, and more, according to CEO Kevin Rose. A major redesign is in the works too. The changes will roll out in the next 30 days.
Digg and memeorandum are gunning after categories that have a lot of passionate people expressing themselves online. There is nothing but upside for services like these that help us sort out the good stuff from the fluff around specific verticals.

Reddit.com has successfully been doing this for almost a year...
The major difference is that I doubt many people would be interested in hearing the musings of the average digg user on subjects like world affairs.

If you want a world new site, Make a world news site. If you want politics, Go to any number of sites. Digg is popular because its about tech. I read digg because of it's tech slant. If it goes world news on me, I'm going back to slashdot. At least they stick to their roots.

I don't know. I think people like to comment pretty extensively on news and world events. So it will probably be a good venture for digg

It'd be interesting to see if anyone actually understands it.
A friend of mine has recently set up http://www.theplugg.com, which is basically a digg entertainment clone.
He was surprised to see how the non-techies could not get their head around how it works.
He gets a lot of traffic of people actually reading the news, but when it comes down to voting or submitting stories, people just don't get it.
He gets emails from people saying "I understand there's a voting system here how do I use it?", even though there's a big number next to each story saying VOTE.
Obvoiusly digg has a larger market penetration, and even the techies are into entertainment, so hopefully it will go well.
