Sixty Million Chinese to Blog This Year

Reuters reports that blogging is booming in China. The number of Chinese bloggers is expected to hit 60 million by the end of this year, according to a study on China's media industry by the prestigious Tsinghua University.

I would definitely like to see blogs firmly take hold in China. However, due to censorship issues, I doubt that they would ever have the impact that blogs have in western/democratic nations.

Technorati, back in November, put Chinese-language blogs ahead of English-language ones. This situation has not remained. I wonder if this will put Chinese blogs permanently ahead—in which case many of us need to be learning a new language.
¶ Panasianbiz, you are probably right. I am hopeful blogs can be a democratizing force in Red China though it will take longer there for the reasons you outline; and for the unfair punishments given to bloggers who fail to tow the party line.
