Bloglines RSS Share is Slipping
At Syndicate today Pheedo released some interesting data about RSS use. Full and partial text feeds garner similar click through rates (CTR). Summary feeds average 12% CTR while full-text feeds average 10%.
More interesting, however, Bloglines' share of users is down to 30% from 37% last quarter, at least among the many feeds in Pheedo's network. MyYahoo! and Mozilla, which deliver only headlines, combined make up an even larger share than Bloglines at 32%. Finally, NewsGator and all its various appendages have a combined 14% share. This is consistent for my own feed as well, according to FeedBurner.

Since IAC's acquisition, Bloglines has done very little to protect itself against the increasing availability of RSS readers. Rojo on the other hand, has begun adding value to their reader by introducing community features. Rojo’s hope is to use its community to display more relevant posts.
Readers will need to begin adding value by introducing features aimed at assisting users in consuming content more efficiently. Otherwise, I believe the reader market is at the beginning of the end.

Speaking only for myself (a market sample of size 1)
- MyYahoo sounds too much like 'MyMicrosoft': I don't want to consciously fly into any 1 company's arms, although I do use some Yahoo services (their page styles could use some updating)
- I have never tried Mozilla 'cos a few years ago it still had some major -ves going for it (e.g. many plugin requirements) It seems that Mozilla still fails on ~10% of websites (this could very well be because the sites are badly written). And I don't like the silly ways that non-IE browsers are trying to chip at IE directly or indirectly via other companies/partners(see e.g. http://www.inquisitorx.com/beta/)... they should rather do so by truly offering a better product, in spite of IE's hegemony.
- I want a web-based free RSS reader... and Newsgator is too slow and bloated IMHO
So that leaves Bloglines... I like the simple i/f and the speed. Yes, it has some problems (e.g. cookie-based 'read' status).
