Google Bans MSN Search Boxes from Blogspot?

Google has allegedly told a blogger who hosts his site on the company's Blogspot servers that he can't have an MSN Search box on his blog. According to the blogger, Google claims this violates their terms of service. The search box is still live on the site, as you can see from the screen grab below. (Via digg)

This isn't going to make Google any friends. I can see why they'd prefer it be a Google search box but we all have our favorites. And telling a blogger at blogspot what he can and cannot have on his blog is likely to lead to bloggers moving to other platf [Read More]

I wouldn't be surprised if this is a hoax, however, does anyone read the Blogger TOS? If it's in there, then I guess they have every right to say something. I wonder if Google sweeps through looking for searchbox code, I doubt they have humans watchdogging this kind of thing.

Bad market strategy...

The blog seems to have vanished now.

Hmmm, that guys blog got deleted, or he deleted it. Probably a hoax.

Hoax or not, the vanished blog index page shows a PageRank of 6 on the Google toolbar. Google lists several backlinks to the blog. It looks like the author has moved his blog to WordPress.

I think we shouldn't be so harsh on Google. After all, they give a free blog, and then host it for free. All they are asking is that people obey their "house rules". Granted, not everyone reads the Terms of Agreement. But, is it really so terrible that they ask blogspot users not to use a competitive search box?

Google says the claim is not true.
