The Four P's of Blog Marketing

Anyone who has spent any time around marketers has probably heard about the profession's "Four P's." These are the core elements of marketing - product, price, place and promotion. Well, the more I think about it, blog marketing needs its own version of the four P's. How about these?

The Four P's of Blog Marketing

Passionate - Write about issues that are near and dear to your heart
Purposeful - Make sure you keep the end in mind; why are you blogging?
Present - Keep an eye on what's topical today
Positional - Take a stand on an issue and follow it

This makes a nice companion piece to Andy Sernovitz's "5 T's" of word of mouth marketing.

Good list. I'd add a fifth, and frankly Steve - you're a great example:

Participate: Share what you learn with others.

Hi Steve,

Congrats on your new gig!

I'd swap PROFITABLE for PRESENT.

Hmm, as a company do we always have to take a position? Perhaps our blog is just used for communicating to our (current and potential) customers and there are no issues to follow? What if we just emulate the Google Blog and purposefully blog about present things (passionately)? Interesting thought...

Did you have a chance to see my post entitled The Ease of Blogging?

Steve: Always excellent advice. The 4 P's (as well as the added P's provided by others) all combine to create a communication tool that is POWERFUL. And we all thought the Internet was just going to be about fun and games!

Thanks for the 4 p's for blogging. As I continue to shout from the mountain tops to the corporate sector that blogging is a great thing, it always helps to simplify the presentation so the new bloggers understand and then act!

It's amazing how a few simple words can actually mean so much. Sticking with those four might seem easy enough, but in reality, it's an everyday struggle.

I agree with Francois about marketing, I will only add outsourcing may be

The interesting thing about the 4P's of marketing is that Harvard did an analysis and came up with piles more marketing-related words that began with 'P'.

So really you can say whatever 'P' you think's appropriate.

Personally I like the idea of Passionate Blog Marketing - as I'm also a Marketing Evangelist.

Great idea !
In french, it's difficult to get the 4P's but we will keep it in english...:)

I've been stuck down in the weeds doing blog marketing for some time. At first blush this seemed a little too simple and high level. However on closer scrutiny, I would say, 'brilliant'! You've certainly given me something to think about. Thanks! :-)

Okay, Steve, I'll see your 4 Ps of blog marketing, and raise you THOT for blogger credibility. ;)

Transparent
Honest
Open to opposing opinions
Thorough

Guess, it could be THOOOT!
Mike
