Kvetch About Companies on Your Blog and Win

I am participating as a judge in an exciting new conversational marketing campaign called Everyday Hogwash. The concept is pretty cool. Simply blog your stories about the way you've been treated by a not-so-nice by companies, record a podcast segment or post a photograph, mention Everday Hogwash at the end with a link, send it in and you're entered.

The campaign is for an internet phone service called SunRocket. I'm not quite sure I get the connection between kvetching and phones. It was hatched by GMD Studios out of Orlando. This is the same group behind the successful Audi blog marketing campaign.

The idea of linking up an internet phone service with people who are 'constantly' on the net is not a bad one. But as you mentioned: what's the link between kvetching and phones? In other words: what's the link between the message and the product (to use some old-fashioned advertising terms). There is hardly any if you ask me. And that is exactly the weak point of this campaign. I am sure a lot of bloggers will be thrilled to see their rants being awarded with a prize (so yes, in a sense this is cool), but what will it do for SunRocket? Moreover - and now I myself am being probably a bit old-fashioned: how sincere will the entries be if they are stimulated by the desire of winning prizes? The attraction of blogs is that you can read real stories from real people. But I can imagine a lot of company names will be 'used in vain' (and wasn't that one of the ten deadly sins? ;-) ) in the months to come. I do not think the blogosphere should rock the foundations of its own cabinet... Or am I taking this too far?

Why would you want to encourage negative blog posts? Isn't this just reinforcing the image that bloggers are online terrorists out to destroy reputations?

I think the contest should be for BOTH negative and positive entries.
