I am at the Word of Mouth Marketing Association's Basic Training conference in Orlando, Florida today. Toby Bloomberg, Josh Hallett, Dana Vanden Huevel, and Marianne Richmond are live blogging it. I will also provide an account of my own experiences here throughout the next two days.

I've been selling tie-dyes for 28 years, and I've been on line for about 7 years. It was very slow the first couple of years and I lived off my wholesale business. Now I think word of mouth is the main way I get new customers, because my visitor numbers go up and down while my sales stay fairly steady. I am usually
number one or two on Google, MSN, and Yahoo for the word tie-dyes.

Here's my viral marketing secret. Each order goes out with an insert that has washing and garment care instructions, a product list, links to my sites and a packet of 5 business cards which have become 2 sided with descriptions and contact info for any way that it is possible to reach me.

You've got to have a product that has what I call "Wow Factor!". Especially if it is a product that is seen which doesn't just include clothing and cars anymore.

Other Secrets--Fanatic Personal Customer Service. I look at any time spent on the phone or through email as a way to make a friend and possible life long customer.
