Bookmarklets Every Blogger Should Have

Here's a bunch of bookmarklets that I use every day in Firefox. I highly recommend them. To use these, drag each one individually into your Favorites or Links toolbar (in IE), or your bookmarks folder/toolbar in Firefox. (Hint: in Firefox you can also assign a single keystroke to each. Then all you need to do is type that letter in the address field and hit enter and the bookmarklet activates.)

  • Wikipedia look-up - select some text and click this link and WIkipedia will look it up
  • del.icio.us look-up - tells you who has bookmarked a page you're reviewing
  • Flickr look-up - search for multiple tags on Flickr, separated by commas
  • Alexa this - will look up any site you're visiting on Alexa, a great resource for statistics
  • What's similar? - searches Google for similar pages to the one you're on
  • BugMeNot - for news sites behind a registration gate
  • TinyURL this - create a short URL for the page you're visiting
  • Bloglines this - see who has linked to a page on bloglines
  • Technorati this - does the same for Technorati

Good tips: especially love the Wikipedia and BugMeNot marklets.

Cool post - already using most but the Wikipedia marklet will definitely come in handy.

Here’s a few more:

Flickr it–Allows you to post pictures straight from a website into Flickr

Search del.icio.us
–Allows you to search any tag from del.icio.us

del.icio.us linkbacks–Allows you to see who else is linking to a web page you’re on

Another very useful little marklet tool: Tagyu - select some text, click the bookmark, and Tagyu selects the best keywords based on associations from del.icio.us, etc.

I'm a big fan of GMailThis!

javascript:popw='';Q='';x=document;y=window;if(x.selection) {Q=x.selection.createRange().text;} else if (y.getSelection) {Q=y.getSelection();} else if (x.getSelection) {Q=x.getSelection();}popw = y.open('https://mail.google.com/mail?view=cm&tf=0&to=&su=' + escape(document.title) + '&body=' + escape(Q) + escape('\n') + escape(location.href),'gmailForm','scrollbars=yes,width=680,height=510,top=175,left=75,status=no,resizable=yes');if (!document.all) T = setTimeout('popw.focus()',50);void(0);

Any chance you could show how to get all those "subsciptions" buttons onto a blog site? I used subzero which seemed to cover a few of them...

Regards

Excellent resources. Thanks!

Something else worth remembering, for firefox anyway, are the incredible amount of search plugins available.

There's also the multitool bookmarklet that allows you to make your own bookmarklet for quite a few social bookmarking sites like del.icio.us, Blinklist, Furl, RawSugar, etc..

Very interesting.
Thank you so much!

Great stuff, thanks!

Though not for every blogger, several blogger.com users seem to find my XBlogThis! bookmarklet hack useful. It helps users generate Technorati tags in their posts.

If you are using firefox most of these bookmarklets are accessible either through menu, right click, toolbars, search bar or extensions.

View - Page style - No style can be used if you want to view the current page without any stylesheet.
I must agree that I myself don't use the menu and instead depend upon the bookmarklet since it's visible on the bookmarks toolbar.

Bookmarklets come really handy when you are dealing with forms.
For e.g. you can check the !get and !put utility to remember and reuse form data. The "increase text area" bookmarklet will increase the textarea by 5 lines. "View password" to see the password instead of stars.

Update: check out

http://blummy.com/

It allows you to collect all your favorite bookmarklets in a dropdown window!

Some bookmarklets for tagging your posts:

To add technorati tags: See the "online tag-o-matic" at Masoner.net.

To tag posts for your account on del.icio.us:

See Freshblog for instructions on how to customise & use an available bookmarklet.

Thanks! - I just started using these and they are already saving me time.
