This should not be surprising. According to Alexa, Wikipedia currently has more pageviews than dictionary.com.

"The internet" is not only English. dictionary.com can be the most popular reference site on the Internet for English language users. But that does not makes it the most popular reference site on the Internet.
Also do not forget Wikipedia is +/- 200x a encyclopedia. Wikipedia is not only en.wikipedia.org
