Blogger Powers Google Press Center

Google is using Blogger to power its press center and generate a press release RSS feed. I think this could be something we'll see lots of companies do. It's more efficient for journalists when PR professionals post press releases themselves in a timely matter and simultaneously generate opt-in RSS alerts. Blog technology cures us from the occasional lag time that takes place once a corporate IT dept. gets involved in posting releases.

Took an amazingly long time for the company that owns Blogger to offer RSS feeds of its press room.

That's the bigger suprise to me. But, it's a good proof point for RSS firms for other corporations to adopt RSS for the press rooms.

How many IT departments are still posting press releases for the PR department?

For the past 10 years in my web development firm, any client large enough to have a PR deparment had a content management system or a basic web-based tool to post press releases and news online. Even sites that had budgets of less than $3000.00 had this ability.

Josh, a suprising number of them are still handled by IT. You are likely thinking small firms, not large Fortune 500 companies that have everything compartmentalized. Having worked on the PR side of things, I know this first-hand, not from the Web developer side of things.

That's why products like Nooked (disclosure, client) and iPressroom (disclosure, friend) are filling a needed void - a way for the PR person to do things themselves, and easily.
