Someone Else is Making Money Off My Content

Constantin says that the 101publicrelations.com blog is republishing excerpts of postings from various PR blogs and is making money of our content with Google ads. This is the downside of offering your content in a full-text feed. I don't mind if they make money off my content. As I see it, I benefit from greater visibility. If a blogger feels they're getting ripped off then they can turn off the faucet by publishing a headline-only RSS feed or none at all.

I'd doubt they're making much money off of it, to be honest. Certainly not enough to be worth their time setting it up, I bet.

However, posting full-text copies from RSS feeds is no better than scraping someone's HTML and republishing that. They should stick to fair-use. If someone wants to post excerpts with a (click here to read more) which links to my site, I'm fine with that. Full reposts? That's against the law.

I think it's a little more complicated than that. Whatever the blogosphere thinks, copyright laws apply to RSS. In other words, people should not be going around republishing other peoples RSS entries, they must excerpt and link back. That's the law.

Consider this:

They are not making money off of your content so much as their SERVICE of PROVIDING THE CONTENT.

Now - sure, they could just link to you. But do you see AOL charging people to use their software in which they then view your article as the same? What's the difference?

Both models are for a service; it's not as if all they're doing is reposting your content in the same manner and with not additional usefulnes. They're prodiving the service of aggregating that.

I don't mind people using an excerpt of my articles, RSS feed but when they publish full ones (with or without a link back) I start getting uncomfortable for three reasons:

1. posting something without attribution is plagiarism - there is no way around this - making money off it takes it a step further - theft.

2. posting full articles with attribution without permission for money breaks the creative commons licence that I use which has a little line in it about making money from it. If I want to get technical even using a quote if you make money from it probably breaks the licence too - however I don't mind quotes or excerpts as much.

3. when people post content that appears on your site in multiple places this creates duplicate content. If enough places post it and if it happens on enough of your posts you might just find Google deranking it. Read their guidelines/advice to webmasters and you'll see they warn people not to post the same thing in multiple locations. This is a strategy spammers have used for a long time and Google have made moves to track and penalise such content. My concern with people republishing my full articles is that Google has no real way of seeing if the duplicate content is a spammer or an innocent problem of people copying RSS feeds.

For these reasons (and after seeing many people republish many of my RSS feeds in full) I've moved to only giving excerpts in my RSS feeds.

If you check out the site, it does actually link back to Micropersuasion, after providing the full text of the post though...The funny thing is that it appears to be just a dump with no intelligence behind it. This post about 101publicrelations.com is currently repeated on their front page.

If you check Steve's CC license, it allows for commercial use of his content, so republishing and "making money" is therefore allowed. The only requirement is attribution.

There are other sites doing the same. This one uses my posts, VentureBlog's and a few others, and redistributes them. They are not too clever about it though: they republished a lot of our blogs yesterday, not preserving dates, etc. Not too "useful" indeed.

Also, how do you see this in comparison to:
a) Search engines (they do the same, in a way)
b) Other online content aggregators (such as PubSub, news.google.com, Moreover etc.)
c) Web-based RSS aggregators, such as Bloglines (because, in technical terms, there isn't much difference)

I couldn't agree more, a recent debate nearly ruined scoble's link blog for the rest of us. I mentioned in that case that there is no down side here, the worst that can happen is that someone who didn't read your blog before, will not be interested enough to read it now, all your loyal readers will remain, the upside is increased exposure to well targeted readers.

Link blogs are simply human aggregators of topic/taste specific content, finding a link-blogger with tastes similar to yours is like gold, saving you a heap of time, and introducing you to new writers. They're a human del.icio.us engine...!

My blog was not picked up as one of the Eighteen, but here's how I would consider it.

* Like Steve, I'm largely happy to have my posts picked up. If someone is (trying) to pick up a little coin by aggregating PR feeds, I'm OK with it.

* But I would expect to be asked first. This is not analogous to the Scoble "link-blog" issue, where Scoble scanned many blogs to pluck out some gems. He blogged me once, for example, but never before or since. But this "service" scrapes everything that comes across the wire. They should at least ask.

* However, some of you are saying "this is why I don't provide full feed." Note that this site isn't reprinting full feed, just the first para. I've never seen a good argument against providing full feed, and this isn't one either.

Perhaps I should rephrase ... if a web site served as an aggregator for very specific niche content (such as RSS metrics for example), or acted as an aggregator for many tightly focused niche topics within a niche topic, would you be against someone quoting the first 100 words (or even less, let's say 20 to 50) of your post and provide full credit and bring the visitor back to your site, whenever your content matched his criteria?

We have made a number of changes over the last several days, and have several more in the works right now that will be implemented before we come out of beta.

Another con for providing full feeds: as soon as they are picked up by aggregators who publish the full content, possibly without giving a backlink, Google may think it's duplicate content -- and PageRank may decide who's cut off from the listing (possibly, you). As the other aggregator semi-blog might use other spammy methods, they may have a high PageRank, and certainly a high update frequently (they may include more blogs than just yours). And if nothing else, I use Google for my internal blog search, and duplicate content would turn out to be a problem. Maybe not that much for me, as I have a high PR, but possibly for others.

And this isn't just some abstract issue. I've seen whole *linkfarms* stealing my RSS, in a kind of huge dumb automated site intended to fool Google. I'm happy they'll only get the first few 100 characters from my main posts.

I'm glad these issues are being discussed now. After seeing more and more 'linkfarm' type use of RSS feeds a solid protocol needs to be put in place to educate webmasters. Remember RSS is still relatively new and many webmasters are not aware of the issues.

There is even software available to buy (I won't name it here) that is specifically developed to 'farm' RSS feeds for the sole purpose of being used as Goolge fodder. Many who buy this sort of software are not going to be aware of the issues and probably not understand what RSS is.

I think RSS usage is one of the hottest issues right now, there are discussions of different sites how RSS feeds should be used and what is the right way to display the information placed inside them.

Let's say someone else uses your content and has Adsense at the same time on their site. But what about Googlebot, it will most likely crawl your site and add it to their database. If a user searches for a word that is linked to his site, not only will his posts appear in the search results, but Google will make some $ off the ads they sell. Isn't that almost the same thing?

Basically, I agree if you use someone else content you need to give them full credit, that includes as you say link to the original source, copyright message, if available, no full text articles (even though I don't see the point to put your full content in RSS, the main goal to every site is to get visitors isn’t that right?)

And lastly I would like to mention that I have a RSS directory, RSSHut, which includes, for right now only news sites, and even though I use Adsense you cannot see the content of RSS feed if you don't have an account, which is free. I haven't had any problems for now ... who knows, tomorrow someone from Yahoo or CNN can send me a letter remove our feeds or we'll sue you a** :)

P.S. I have sent emails to CNN, Yahoo, and Wired and haven’t had any response, so I guess they just don’t care.

This is fascinating discussion. Very relevant to me, because that's exactly what my blog Another Chance To See does.

I link to news articles with snippets to make the reader want to read more, (roughly 100-200 words), and always credit the original source of the article.

I'm always nervous when I see copyright notices about reproduction, but I see so many sites doing this sort of thing I figured it was OK. I'm DRIVING traffic to their sites, so surely its a win-win situation, and I never repost complete articles.

Like Rich said, "finding a link-blogger with tastes similar to yours is like gold, saving you a heap of time", and thats what I feel like I'm doing. In my case, serving the Douglas Adams fan community.

My Google traffic has gone up because I've rocketed up various search term results (eg Madagascarthemovie ), and so in the long run I'm providing new readers to the news sites that they'd never have had before.
