CNET to Launch Web-Based RSS Reader
As far as I know this is a blog exclusive. CNET News.com is launching a Web-based RSS news aggregator called Newsburst. The site, now in preview, will compete with Bloglines and Rojo. CNET's move comes on the heels of the LA Times and Guardian, which launched desktop RSS readers last week. This is the beginning of a trend where the big media launch branded RSS aggregators to make sure they retain reader loyalty.
The copy on the CNET Newsburst preview site reads...
Newsburst is a personalized tool that tracks virtually any type of information on the Web: news, blogs, shopping lists, weather, search results, alerts, auctions and more.
- Follow the sites you care about
- See the newest content in one glance
Information is everywhere, and Newsburst lets you access it from one place. Read differently.
Here's a screen grab from the site...

I love preview sites that have a registration form that you can fill out, but not submit successfully thanks to missing form fields... Hopefully it's better than ROJO which has been mostly a UI nightmare from what I've seen.

Jeez...the UI on the registration alone sucks eggs. The black error text that looks just like normal text with "Value is required" repeated makes me have high hopes for the actual app...which I can't sign up for because of the already mentioned missing form fields.
Bloglines isn't problem free by any stretch but this makes them look stellar.

Not that it matters, but Newsburst was mentioned on the RSS Compendium Blog last month:

Don't try signing up if you're not in the US or Canada as it wont let you leave the Zip/Post code box blank and wont except UK postcodes - I have tried several. You just get the message
(U.S. and Canadian residents)
Address 1: Value is required
Not a great first impression.

Scott, I think I pulled the curtain up on the service before it was fully ready. Peter, sorry I missed that.

Yes, the registration is down; it will be fixed later Thursday morning the 10th, at which point I encourage anyone to try it out.
Welcome all comments, especially the ones which will help us improve the experience.
Steve, was wondering if you would be the first to see it. ;-)

Take a look at Lektora, http://www.lektora.com
Nice clean and fast browser integrated RSS reader for Windows (IE/Firefox), MacOS X and Linux.

Steve - did you actually try using this service?
In its current incarnation I think Newsbust would be a better name. C'mon CNET, you guys are better than this. No podcast/RSS enclosure support, a recommended list full of the same people we always see, tons of wasted space in the reading area, features which don't work correctly ... yowsa. Spaghetti, anywone?
For those interested, click my name and read a full, detailed review of this aggregator. Needless to say, it needs a *lot* of work.

TDavid, welcome to a preview release.
Steve Rubel found us earlier than expected (good for him), and we're polishing.
Appreciated the detailed review, as I said in your comments.

I prefer a nice clean interface... no ads and images cluttering it up. Waggr is the web-based rss reader for me - http://www.waggr.com/
