Yes, indeed, we do that for about six months here in Croatia where blogging service blog.hr is tied up with one of the most visited news portals in Croatia monitor.hr and it sparked furiouse media interest lately cause web diaries brought down croatian diplomat, made local politicians on alert etc...
It's an interesting function we build in croatian blogging service incorporated into blog editor and called "send to the editors".
And it works. Citizen journalism on work. I wrote about that in my blog entries lately.
