The New York Sun ran a "hit piece" today that says that Nick Denton's Gawker site has "jumped the shark."
After years as the biting monarch of the gossip world, gawker.com may have reached a plateau - or even begun a decline. Much as when the Fonz waterski jumps over shark-filled water on television's "Happy Days," in a scene that has become a symbol of desperation in the industry, Gawker.com may have jumped the shark.
Uh, Gawker still matters. For one, if it didn't, no one would even publish such an article. Who would read it? Second, the piece is loaded with quotes from Gawker's more mainstream competitors, so it holds little water with me. I bet they may have even planted this piece.
Nick and I gave a talk yesterday with fellow blogger Jeff Jarvis to the Association of National Advertisers' Corporate Communications Committee. The meeting was private so I can't blog the details, but I can tell you that Nick knows quite well what he is doing. Nick and crew, keep on keepin' on. Don't give a hoot what these naysayers say. They're just scared of ya...but you don't need me to tell you that. You already know.
